Using the Library: Magazines and E-Resources

This guide is a break down of what the library can offer and how we can help you be your best (student) self!

Pamphlets

Pamphlets

Pamphlets can be found in filing cabinets close to the Journals and Periodicals are, opposite the Issue Desk. Items in these cabinets will be marked as 'Pamphlet' on the Discovery Catalogue and will have the letter 'P' before their call number. They are still ordered by the Dewey Decimal System. Readers can browse through these collections themselves, but pamphlets are for use in the library only.

OpenAthens

Open Athens

The Library provides access to a number of e-journal titles and resources databases.

On campus, you can access these through the library website. The databases know you're an NCAD student if you access them on campus but you will need you student number and myNCAD password.

Off campus, you need to log in using your Open Athens login details first - this mimics the effect of being on campus, as far as the databases are concerned, it's just one extra step.

IT support will send these details to your student email.

The Chill Space

Want to Relax with a Magazine?

If you want to sit down and relax with a magazine we have an informal reading area called 'The Chill Space'. Situated next to the printers, this area welcomes light reading and conversation, providing a casual setting to relax and look at magazines, pamphlets or sort through books you have found on the shelves while browsing.

Journals

Flipster

NCAD students and staff can access a selection of digital magazines through Flipster, which includes a wide range of titles from a variety of publishers. These are accessible via a web browser or via the Flipster app for Apple or Android devices, and the Kindle Fire tablet. With Flipster, users can download magazines to read offline, anytime, anywhere!

To access Flipster via mobile or tablet, you will need to download the app from the iTunes App store or Google Play Store while on the NCAD WiFi network. When prompted, select the National College of Art and Design as your library on the app and follow the instructions to login.

Once this is completed you can browse, search, and download popular magazines to read offline and access an audio version of articles for each magazine. You can also read articles in text view, tap highlighted areas to jump to articles and related websites and bookmark articles you find on the app.

Print Journals, Pamphlets and E-Resources

The Library subscribes to a number of print journals on behalf of its users - new ones come in every day, so be sure to check the shelves regularly.

Journal and magazine issues can be taken out on loan, just like a book!

The Library also collects large numbers of pamphlets and exhibition catalogues - there aren't available to loan, but free to browse and read within the library! These are held in the filing cabinets marked 'Pamphlets' and you are welcome to browse these drawers, just like an open shelf.
