Introduction: Art and Activism
Artists have always responded to the social and political changes taking place around them. The history of art shows that political power and art making are often inextricably linked, from the patronage of the Medici to the use of art to assert a new political narrative. In this guide we explore library material which asks the potential of art in relation to political action. Asking questions such as: can the use of aesthetics be effective methods for change? Can art be used against the political context of its making? Does political action need art?
